Background of the Study
Hybrid teaching methods, which combine both online and face-to-face learning, have gained increasing popularity in nursing education due to their flexibility and ability to cater to diverse learning preferences. The University of Lagos College of Medicine (COLM) has incorporated hybrid teaching strategies in its nursing programs, offering a blend of classroom-based instruction and online learning modules. This approach is particularly relevant in nursing education, where students must balance theoretical knowledge with practical skills in clinical settings (Ogunleye & Adebayo, 2023).
The hybrid model has been found to improve student engagement and learning outcomes by providing flexible access to educational resources, fostering collaboration through online platforms, and accommodating different learning styles. Studies suggest that hybrid learning can enhance critical thinking, problem-solving, and clinical decision-making skills, essential competencies in nursing education (Ibrahim & Uche, 2024). Additionally, hybrid methods allow students to engage with learning materials at their own pace and revisit content as needed, which is beneficial for retention and comprehension.
Despite its advantages, the effectiveness of hybrid teaching methods in nursing education is still a subject of debate. Challenges such as the need for reliable internet access, the ability to maintain student motivation in an online environment, and ensuring the quality of practical clinical experiences have raised concerns about the model’s overall success. This study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of hybrid teaching methods in nursing education at the University of Lagos College of Medicine, focusing on their impact on student learning outcomes and clinical competencies.
Statement of the Problem
The adoption of hybrid teaching methods at the University of Lagos College of Medicine has the potential to enhance nursing education by combining the benefits of online learning with traditional face-to-face instruction. However, the effectiveness of this model in improving nursing students’ learning experiences and clinical competencies remains underexplored. There are concerns regarding the accessibility of technology, students’ readiness to engage in hybrid learning, and the integration of online components with practical, hands-on clinical experiences. Therefore, there is a need to evaluate the impact of hybrid teaching methods on nursing students’ learning outcomes and clinical skills development.
Objectives of the Study
1. To evaluate the effectiveness of hybrid teaching methods in enhancing nursing students’ learning outcomes at the University of Lagos College of Medicine.
2. To assess the impact of hybrid teaching methods on the development of clinical competencies in nursing students.
3. To identify the challenges and limitations associated with the implementation of hybrid teaching methods in nursing education at the University of Lagos College of Medicine.
Research Questions
1. How effective are hybrid teaching methods in enhancing nursing students’ learning outcomes at the University of Lagos College of Medicine?
2. What is the impact of hybrid teaching methods on the development of clinical competencies in nursing students?
3. What challenges and limitations are associated with the implementation of hybrid teaching methods in nursing education at the University of Lagos College of Medicine?
Research Hypotheses
